ETHAN

Ten minutes later, we were on our way over to the son’s house. Sweeting had done just as he insisted he would and called back to the station to look up the man’s information. I’d already noticed in the morgue, but Sweeting’s demeanor had changed entirely. His little comments about Douval’s death not being a real case had all ceased. In fact, he’d barely spoken a word at all. After obtaining the son’s address, the three of us quickly hopped back into our cars to head over there.

“No evidence of anything, huh?” Holm asked a few minutes after we’d gotten on the road. “That sure sounds ominous.”

“It doesn’t make sense,” I argued. “And that annoys me. There has to be evidence of something because something happened to kill him. Even if it was just natural causes, there are ways to tell, right? Organs giving out or something?” I turned to look at Holm because I actually didn’t know.

“I guess.” Holm shrugged. “I’m not a doctor.”

“Me neither,” I muttered, my thoughts on the matter still muddled. We were definitely missing something, especially if we were now dealing with two additional dead bodies. Douval’s death might have been explained away as natural, if a bit mysterious, but three unexplained deaths all involving rich, elderly people and their wills?

We arrived at the house in question just a few minutes later. The small, one-story bungalow was the complete opposite of the enormous mansion that Douval had lived in. Actually, the place was homely even compared to the buildings in downtown Nassau. A man was standing on the front lawn when we arrived, tapping his foot as he watched us pull in.

Holm and I got out of the car at the same time as Sweeting. The second we stepped foot on the grass, the man came marching over to us.

“You must be Sam Turnquest,” Sweeting greeted him. “I’m–”

“Finally!” the man, Turnquest, cut him off before he could finish. “I got a call from the cops saying you wanted to talk to me about my ma and pa. That’s why you’re here, right?”

“Yeah,” I replied as I stepped forward to greet him. “I’m Agent Marston with MBLIS. And this is–”

“Right, sure,” Turnquest interrupted as I was about to introduce Holm. “That’s all good. Come on inside.”

I blinked in surprise at his harried response as he turned and shuffled back toward the door of the house, motioning for us to follow him. I turned to exchange a look with Holm, who looked a little put off as well. The three of us followed Turnquest into his house.

The inside was about as simple and bare as the outside. As I took a look around at the shabby, sparsely placed furniture, I recalled that this man’s parents were actually very wealthy. It was obvious, then, that absolutely none of their wealth had gone to Turnquest when they’d died.

No wonder he’d demanded that autopsy.

“I knew it was just a matter of time before Bricker got what was coming to him,” Turnquest muttered as he stomped over to his couch.
